Traverse v. 2.0
Traverse Player's Handbook v. 2.0 has just been released. This is an enormous update containing, in the text, a few essential mechanical changes and a whole slew of cosmetic and language adjustments. v. 2.0 is presented in a fully formatted and illustrated PDF!
Major Changes:
- Character Creation: v. 1 allowed too great disparity between new characters and permitted characters to start the game too powerful. v. 2.0 addresses these concerns by limiting new characters to a new maximum "Base Modifier" of 5 instead of 8 and instituting a new "Weakness" aptitude.
- "Race" is now "Heritage", and uses of the term "race" have been altered (often to "heritage" or "people") where appropriate.
- "Racial Aptitudes" are now "Born Aptitudes" and are no longer attached to a player's choice of heritage.
- The magical class "Sorcerer" has been replaced by "Golemist".
- Chapters 2 and 3 have been reordered (formerly Magic and Encounters, now Encounters and Magic respectively).
- The Appendices have been reordered.
Minor Changes:
- Intellect is no longer added to a character's fortune during character creation.
- Average Dvargen height has been changed from <12' to <10' to diminish disparity.
- The Kokuum skill Friend of the Beasts no longer grants automatic friendship, and instead grants +6.
- A limit of 2 transferable Reserve HP has been placed on the Myradin ability Berserker.
- Tulean "Diplomatic Awareness" ability renamed "Empire's Gift".
- Unnecessary, often binary, references to sex and gender have been removed from Heritage descriptions and the Creature Codex.
- Various instances of unconscious racism and sexism have been removed.
- Lore has been adapted to remove canonical monotheism and now reads more nebulously.
- Symbols or abbreviations for the three major currency denominations have been included.
- Noil items are no longer listed with Low Quality items.
- Creatures whose abilities Slowed players now include numerical values in ability description.
- The "additional continent" of Dhorubapwani has been given more mystery and is no longer just a continent-sized mining operation.
- All Magical Item SCs have been diminished by 5.
- Numerous grammatical and syntactical adjustments have been made.
If you have downloaded and read or played Traverse v. 1.7, or you download, read, and play v. 2.0, please contact me with any feedback! Not only will it make my day, it may help shape further developments in this original TTRPG. Tell me about your character, about the original content you developed for a campaign, about any changes you would make to the game!
Traverse is the creation of one white cisgender man and is consequently subject to a lot of unconscious bias. Not only that, but the first pages of this manual were written as long ago as 2011, when said man was a teenager with much less awareness of social justice. If you notice a bias in the text, implicit or explicit, that may negatively impact gameplay for any marginalized people group and you have the spoons to let me know, please do. I want Traverse to be accessible in every sense of the word, and rewarding and enriching for all players.
